Modern Slavery & Child Trafficking
Vulnerabilities and Windows of Intervention
Part 1 (June 26)
Part 1 of the safeguarding week webinar explores how modern slavery affects children and young people, focusing on vulnerabilities, risk indicators and opportunities for early intervention across safeguarding roles.
Police colleagues use a recent case study to show how exploitation can present through:
- Child Criminal Exploitation (CCE)
- Child Sexual Exploitation (CSE)
- County lines
- Cuckooing and Home Invasion
Exploring themese of:
- Changing exploitation methods and organised crime group tactics
- Key intelligence themes supporting identification and response
- Increased vulnerability linked to SEND, neurodiversity and intersecting needs
- Practical tools for safeguarding, including information sharing, professional curiosity, PiP, and recent legislative and practice developments
Part 2
Child 'F'
Part 2 of the webinar explores a recent case study with Child 'F' who has been working with the Youth Justice Service. Presenters share the opportunities and challenges they faced and look at the case specific intervention programme they put in place to safeguard child 'F'.
Part 3
'Communication Passport'
Part 3 of the webinar explores vulnerabilities, risk indicators and opportunities for early intervention across safeguarding roles through use of effective communication tools designed for neurodivergent children.
The Youth Justice Service explore:
•Increased vulnerability linked to SEND, neurodiversity and intersecting needs
•Practical tools for safeguarding, including information sharing, professional curiosity, and recent practice developments around a 'Communication Passport' which has been welcomed by children and education providers. (While the intervention is not meant to replace a formal plan (such as an EHCP) it does provide an excellent summary of the child's voice and how they prefer to work with the YJS. This demonstates a valuable tool which can help services to prepare and plan bespoke interventions tailored to each individual child).
This session was designed for all practitioners who work to keep children safe from harm, this session supports a consistent, multi‑agency approach to risk and response.

- How and who we target when breaking the cycle of child exploitation
- Using legislation to create appropriate evidence-led prosecutions for perpetrators
- Explore the tools available to practitioners when disrupting exploitation
- Evidence best practise through Case Studie exploration
- Distruption measures for children in transistion to adulthood
- Explore barriers and limitations to current legislation and civil orders
National Referral Mechanism

As part of our Speak Up! Stand Up! Stop Exploitation! campaign, during our virtual Learning Exchange event we were joined by colleagues from West Yorkshire Police’s Modern Slavery and Human Trafficking Team, and Barnardo’s Independent Child Trafficking Guardianship Service for a deep dive into the National Referral Mechanism.

From Information to Intelligence

Ivison Trust and West Yorkshire Police discuss the value and context of information and intelligence, how it drives intervention and investigation and introduced the Partnership Intelligence Portal (PiP) to those who work and volunteer with children and their families.

Serious Youth Violence
Safeguarding Week June 2024
With input from the Violence Reduction Partnership, Youth Justice Service, West Yorkshire Police, Ivison Trust, St Giles Trust and WSCP audit activity we had a West Yorkshire wide audience where we shared best practice, a deeper understanding and knowledge around serious violence in the area and gained an invaluable insight into the lived experience of both child, parent and victim.

Trauma: A Lifespan Perspective
Safeguarding Week June 2023
Learn more about Wakefield’s response to Trauma and its commitment to the West Yorkshire vision of becoming trauma informed with a responsive and whole system approach by 2030.
Part 1 covers the consideration of early developmental trauma from Education Psychology, and how the Future in Minds, CAMHS team are responding to and supporting the workforce.
Part 2
Takes a deeper dive into vulnerable groups from the Youth Justice Service and Emotional Wellbeing team with case studies, models and techniques as well as how to build a self-aware and resilient workforce.

Perplexing Presentations (PP) & Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII)
February 2023
In 2021 new protocols around Perplexing Presentations (PP) and Fabricated or Induced Illness (FII) were introduced. This Masterclass provided clarification around these changes, referral pathways and updated procedures.
Part 1 of the masterclass includes an in-depth review of PP/FII procedures and guidance around the importance of chronology recording.
Part 2
Covers PP/FII and the impact on the child, and also includes a case study of a recent Police investigation into FII.
