How to know if my child is in danger / being exploited?

Language needs to be super simple. CE is... and is undertaken by criminals in many ways.

It is important to remember, it is ever the child’s fault. Be supportive and get them help… anyone can be a victim of CE etc

Understanding your rights

We know that parents can feel helpless when their child is being exploited, other emotions such as guilt, shame, anger, isolation and lack of power etc etc

Bit about not feeling guilty and empowering them to take action. Also intro to legislation and understanding your rights.

How to communicate with services (no swearing – can be seen as aggressive, polite, listen – remember they are trying to help you and your family)

Supporting your child with SEND

Some children who are vulnerable can be more at risk of CE as perps will seek out their vulnerability to exploit etc etc

resources for children with SEND

may be unable to communicate efectively with services

may not recognise vulnerability

may be reliant on perp

What works - peer support from other victims and survivors, awareness training

Risk factors

Resources for children who may be more vulnerable

  • children in care - already ar risk due to the situation that put them in care in the first place
  • SEND - not recognising exploitation and not being able to access support
  • ethnic minorities / those living as immigrants can be targetted by gangs
  • poverty - may be groomed through offers of material possessions
  • Poor mental health through berevement, bullying, low esteem
  • children exluded from school may have more opportunities and may already be exploited which could have led to the exclusion n the first place - disenfranchised / child feels excluded from society / community / voiceless
  • children under the radar - easily targetted by gangs as they are less likely to attract attention.

Places where a child may be exploited

  • online and through technology
  • schools . HE establishments
  • special needs schools
  • sports clubs
  • religious organisations
  • local parks
  • community spaces
  • loacl shops/takaways
  • homeless shelters
